Directing Philosophy

The role of the director is to question the complexities and confines of the human experience while provocatively communicating stories. Authentic storytelling is not limited to explanations through the text; it is experienced. Each theatrical element has equal potential to influence and communicate. I approach the work by intentionally acknowledging each theatrical component as a narrative; through this, I hope to tell stories in unexpected and unique ways. The relationship between subtext and text plagues me, so I am passionate about experimenting with metaphoric ways of communicating the unspoken.

I know the key to a successful production is the result and the process. Theatre is unique because we get to create art that we are proud of by collaborating with people we trust. Communicating a clear vision and structure for the production allows the production team and performers to play, which provides a fresh interpretation and allows passion to fill their work. Creative risks are at the heart of provocative storytelling, and I know it is my job to cultivate an environment safe enough to take those creative risks.

I strive to be an expert on the inner workings of the production before I enter the rehearsal room. I establish a clear vision focused on a central question, dissect the themes within the text, identify imagery, isolate key moments, and strategize the dramatic flow of the piece. I put my research and preparation on the back burner when I enter the rehearsal room. I observe the actor's interpretation of the work with a spirit of inquiry. Having previously identified our production's vision and central question, I can prod the performer with provocative questions that inspire the work. I want them to know they have the agency to bring themselves to their work. By providing a structure to the storytelling, the performer is free to play in a challenging way.

Ultimately, I want to create art that inspires and challenges the spectator to act in response. I know that I don't have all of the answers. Still, I am confident that by being in the room with others, passionate about their craft, we can achieve a production that will grow us as artists, impact the audience, and uphold a beautiful, unique story.
